A third Heathrow runway was given the green light in January of this year, but ministers have said transport needs to be improved to make the most of it.
While Heathrow is a major international airport, only six other UK airports fly there, meaning it is effectively cut off from the majority of the nation. Liverpool Riverside MP, Louise Ellman, says that transport links to the airport must be improved, in particular via the rail network.
Improved rail connections would also have the added benefit of minimising environmental impact, which has been a key concern for many regarding Heathrow’s new runway.
