Dutch airline, KLM, say that they have completed the first passnger flight run on biofuel. The plane, which was run on 50 per cent biofuel and 50 per cent kerosene, took off from Schipol in Amsterdam, circled for an hour and then landed at the same airport.
KLM say that they have proved that such fuel is technically feasible and are encouraging the industry to take steps towards making biofuel a reality.
The airline refuses to declare any timeframe for moving to a more environmentally sustainable fuel source as this was only the very first step. Only one of four engines was powered by the biofuel mix. They also state that for biofuels to be economically feasible, production needs to increase hugely.
